Final Project
For our final project we will be visiting WWLR and speaking with members of the radio station. Some of our goals will be to have a story on their fundraiser where they sold t-shirts, a slide show with Natural sound of someone hosting a show in the radio station, and an accompanying map to illustrate the coverage area for the station and a podcast review of one show.

NEK Video Project
Natural Beauty does not go unappreciated, even by the electronically stimulated generation, when you live here in the northeast kingdom.
You may have to look around for them, but there is plenty of beautiful sights right here near Lyndon State College. Places such Burke Mountain, Lake Willoughby, and historic Darling Hill Road may be some of the most beautiful places not only in the area, but in all of Vermont.
LSC students take the time to enjoy these sights while they have the time up here at school.
“I just love the fresh air,” LSC Senior Kyle Gould said. “It’s nice. We don’t have a lot of people and traffic and stuff that creates a lot of poor air quality like you have in cities, so it’s just nice. ”
62% of students here at LSC are from in state. The other 38% may not have been immersed in the Vermont beauty that the northeast kingdom has to offer.
Burke Mountain, located in East Burke, is the northeast kingdom’s very own ski mountain and resort. People from all over the world travel to see the world-renowned trails and resort that LSC students travel to daily during the winter ski and snowboard season.
“I love being able to go to Burke on a fresh powder day,” said LSC Senior Caleb Noble, who hails from Massachusetts. “There’s nobody at the mountain but you. It’s quiet, it’s beautiful, and there’s nobody around and you just kind of be one with yourself. It’s just a beautiful area.”
Along with Burke Mountain, the world famous Kingdom Trails see millions of visitors every year. The trails cover many miles that LSC students get to ride along during the few warm weeks of the fall semester, and the few warm weeks of the spring semester.
“I love the over 100 miles of mountain biking trails,” said Noble.
With so many places to see, many students prefer to be outside more than they are inside. They find that it is more relaxing, soothing than inside their dorm room.
“The air’s cleaner, its just a lot nicer,” said Senior LSC student Joe Biega.
“There are a lot of hills for physical exercise. For someone like me who used to like to do hills in cross-country…they’re always a good thing to keep your strength up.”
Whether you have just one more semester or many semesters left here at LSC, make sure you get out and enjoy all of the beautiful sights and sounds of the northeast kingdom.

Video Project
For our video project, we're going to be creating a video package of the northeast kingdom. Our sound sources are basically going to be wildlife and natural sound. It will have narration about specific areas that are well known.

Flag Football Soundslide
Lyndon State College Intramurals
The Lyndon state flag football league is one of the hidden treasures for students searching out a Sunday activity. With a small sign up sheet posted near sue Henry's office, word of mouth has continued to fuel and spark interest of many students that are a part of the Lyndon State College community.
The league was based off of the ever-popular AMS flag football tournament. The league was integrated nicely with a full schedule of games for Sunday mornings from 8 to noon. Intramurals Director Sue Henry was able to assign work-study students to referee the games as well.
The game is played with 8 players on the field for each team. The league became more realistic this year by changing the first down rules to be more similar to football; it was changed from a two-completion rule to gaining a certain number of yards from the line of scrimmage. Both of which had to be done within the four downs allotted.
The game is played in two halves of twenty minutes each. There are no fake plays on the extra point either. If the team says they are kicking a field goal they are obligated to kick and cannot throw or run the ball in. With the season quickly concluding, and eminent weather threatening to cover the field in snow, each team knows it is playoff time.
Playoffs are played in a two game per week format for two Sundays in a single elimination style. The final game is the championship game. With the intramural field designated a construction zone, the athletic director allowed the teams access to the soccer field.
Something appreciated by all players, "it’s awesome to be able to play since the school doesn't have a football team and now that we're on the varsity field it brings games to a whole new level." Ed Horan, a junior whose is in his third of playing, explained.
Sue Henry also offers many other intramural options. There are other league options such as basketball, floor hockey, and volleyball.
Along with their league intramurals, there is also a weekly intramural sport offered during the weekends. It is held on Saturdays and ranges from dodge ball to table tennis. Residence halls on campus compete against each other to win the intramural championship.
Intramural activities are meant to be non-competitive and to promote exercise on campus. You can contact Sue Henry at Susan.Henry@lyndonstate.edu for more information on all intramural sports around campus.

CNN iReport Critiques
The first CNN iReport Critique I am doing is:
http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-694324
This first one was just a photo accompanied by a small blurb about the photo. I like the idea of these because they can bring a lighter side to the news. The small child and dog in costume are quite humorous, and many people also enjoyed it.
The next one I critiqued was:
http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-697352
To start, this one had problems loading, where I had perfect internet speed. Once it started, there was no tracking or explanation of what was going on. The title said "Siam bracing for possible floods, but that's not exactly what I saw in the video. This story was not what I expected, or very good in general.
The last one I will critique is:
http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-697283
I had some mixed reviews of this video. Although I could barely see the fire and I did not understand what the person was saying, I thought that the idea of this video was a good one. Any user can upload their video, so in theory, CNN could use this video if it were a fire of an important place or something of that nature. The quality was lacking, but the idea was good, so I actually liked this video.
Overall, the ideas and theory of this part of the website is good, but it is still lacking execution. It needs some policing and some more rules of guidelines before it can take another step to the next level.

Audio Sound Slides Project
Audio Slideshow Project
For our project were going to do an audio slideshow of a flag football game. For our sound source were going to interview one of the players and have him talk about the game and his thoughts. Our intended audience would probably be anyone thats into sports. Its in interesting story because flag football is not a division three sport. The guys are just doing it because they love the game.

Sound Slides
Sound slides are a great way to share a story visual without having to use a video camera. You can still show the visuals you want the viewer to see, and have them hear the soundbites that they need to hear in order to create feelings for the story. Sound slides can share a different story in ways that a video cannot.
The first one I viewed was found when I typed in award winning sound slides. It can be found at http://www.brianmanzullo.com/home/bmanzullo/multimedia/soundslides/paralympic/
This sound slide was a little different than some, and it was amazing. It was an all natural sound piece where there was no tracking by a reporter. The sights and sounds were great, and you could feel like you were there. There were also some soundbites that gave you a better feel of what it would have been like to be there. This sound slide is one of the best I have ever seen.
The second sound slide project that I found was not as serious of a sound slide but was still very good. It can be found at http://www.roanoke.com/multimedia/soundslides/hokie_bird/gallery.html
This one used all tracking, mainly because it would be difficult to interview a mascot. They could have added people's thoughts on the Hokie bird. What they did do great is matched action shots where they matched what the person tracking was saying with a photo of what the Hokie bird doing. Sometimes a goofy and funny sound slide project can be used this way, and it can still be good, like this one.
The last one that I found to critique was on a girls basketball game done by ESPN. It can be found at http://www2.hoopgurlz.com/slide25/index.html
This one used only soundbites to talk to some of the girls from an all-star high school girls basketball game. They used pictures of the girls who played in this game to match with their voices when they were talking. This one could have used some tracking becauuse I was a bit confused as to what it was about in the beginning.
One photo gallery I found was on the Miami Herald website. It can be found at http://www.miamiherald.com/photogalleries/#navlink=navbar
The photo gallery usually has many pictures from almost all of the stories that go onto their website. They take all of the photos and put them up in their gallery for everyone to see. There are captions for each photo that describe what is going on. Each photo can not only be purchased, but shared on social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Google +. Sharing the pictures is another way people can spread the word about their photo gallery and it is a great tool to use if you need photos.
One last sound slide that I found was one without any audio. It can be found at http://vimeo.com/12643770
This one was interesting because it involved more reading instead of listening. The pictures were not all self explanatory and it was difficult to understand what the project was about. Almost every time there was a new picture, I would have to pause the sound slide and read what the caption said in order to understand what was going on in the photo. There's a reason they are called "sound" slides, and that's because they are a lot easier to understand with sound.

Podcast Project
The Hornets Weekly
If you walk down the athletic hallway in between the Rita Bole gym and the theatre lobby, you will see a team picture for every varsity sports team here at Lyndon State College. Last season’s Men’s basketball team picture has 17 student athletes in uniform, however, only two of those student athletes will be included in this season’s team picture.
Senior guard Ben Sackett and Junior Forward Jason Gray are the only two returning players from last year’s squad which made a deep run in the NAC playoffs. Sackett led the NAC in 3-point percentage last season shooting an impressive 44 percent from beyond the arc. Gray was a second team All-NAC selection last season and was the third leading shot blocker in the NAC, and was ranked 6th in the conference in rebounds per game.
Last years roster included nine first-year players, none of them will be suiting up to play this year. The youth on the team combined with strong veteran leadership and made a run all the way to the NAC finals. Gritty post play from Antonio Mena, O’Bee Byrd and Jason Gray teamed up to lead the NAC in team rebounding while NAC rookie of the year Phil Warrick led the Hornets with 18.7 points per game (3rd in the NAC)
This team will definitely be missing all nine of those first players. "We want to be playing out best basketball in the months on January and February," said Head Coach John Krupinski.

The team’s schedule this year consists of Division 1 opponent Yale as well as attending an invitational tournament over Thanksgiving Break in Utah. The team will be filled with new faces this year, and expectations for this team are on the rise.

Podcast Project
Our podcast will be about the upcoming basketball season at LSC. We will talk about returning players, those who have left, and what to expect about the team this year. We may include a soundbite or two from the coach if we get a chance to talk with him, and we would like to bring either a former or current player from the team to join us on our show. We will have plenty to talk about with stats about the team last year, player profiles, and all of that good stuff. The name of the podcast will be "A Closer Look at LSC Basketball."

Story for Mapping Project
Dan,
I was not aware that there was no story with my groups mapping project, so I am writing one so that we do not lose points for not having one. I tried contacting Jackson all day and he has not been responding and was not in class, so I am writing it on here before 5 and it will be attached later once Jackson is available.
Story:
Basketball is a sport that was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts. Over the past few decades it has quickly become one of the most popular American sports, spreading to almost all high schools and colleges in the United States. Here in the North East Kingdom, we have some great competition between schools. Both boys and girls take the court with one thought in mind: Win. Lyndon Institute, St. Johnsbury Academy, Thetford Academy and Littleton High School have Boys and Girls squads who have had great success as a team at one point or another in there history. Lyndon Institute is a private school located in Lyndonville. After a subpar season for the girls team, new head coach Eric Berry will look to take over and revamp this squad into a championship contender. As for the boys, a few average seasons are not ok with the team as they will look to take the next step to make the playoffs. St. Johnsbury academy has always dominated every sport they participate in. With students from around the world they are able to be one of the top schools in the area. Look for both the boys and girls teams to have strong seasons. Thetford Academy is a private school that has been a competitor for quite some time now. While facing tough competition like Danville and South Royalton, the boys team will look to be considered one of the best in their division. The girls team has always been a tough competitor, but has never been able to make it to the next level. This year they will look to try and prove everyone wrong and have a successful season. Littleton High School is a team that has long dominated in many sports. Since Littleton is the biggest town in there area, they have a lot more depth and talent coming into their school system. Their boys and girls teams have always been fierce opponents to all that face them, and they will look to continue their winning ways in Littleton. No matter who you are a fan of, it should be a great basketball season in the NEK for all.

Podcast Reviews
The Thundering Herd:
The Thundering herd is a type of podcast that is actually also a radio show. They take the entire show and turn it into a podcast once the entire show has been aired. This type of podcast is a great idea for those who cannot watch or listen to a show at a given time. They can download the show once it has been posted and listen or watch it whenever or however they please. Although it is considered a "podcast" it is actually just the same as the show. One thing that they could do better is maybe add some behind the scenes stuff or make it so that it is different than the show, making it more enticing for people to watch or listen to it.
Fantasy Football Focus:
Fantasy Football Focus is a podcast that focus specifically on one item as opposed to a bunch of different topics. They talk about different players that should or should not be played on a fantasy football team in a given week. The cool thing about this podcast is that it is available only online. This makes people who play fantasy football want to actually watch and listen to it. Something they could improve upon with this is marketing it better. Not too many people know about it so maybe if they advertised it or tried to plug it on another show people would know about it.
The Onion News Network:
The ONN is a satirical video newscast that takes current events and twists them into funny situations that are different than the real-life. They use video and pictures to create what would seem to be a real life newscast if you did not know that it was satirical. A video element in this podcast makes it a lot different than others as it can bring a different element to the ability to tell a story. They do a great job of re-creating a news set and newscast. What they do need to work on is their ability to tell the story as sometimes some storiesw are different than others.

nsnsports.net Critique
North-East Sports Website is a great tool for those looking to find information on teams news, updates, and scores. They do a lot of things great on this website. They have archive footage of most games from a lot of the teams around the NEK. They have all Vermont teams news and stats. There is a lot of information that you wouldn't be able to find on many school websites. Some things that the website needs to improve on are it's technical aspects. Sometimes video doesn't load, not all stats are up, doesn't always load. All in all, the website has huge potential to be a tremendous tool for viewers and reporters across the state, it just needs more time and effort.

Pimp My Ride...I mean blog
Here is my blog all pimped out. I'm siting here on some all black 22's, alright not really, but I do have some pretty cool stuff here. I have the fish up top which are pretty entertaining, I have the hamster and mini putt. I also have a nice clock too. But other than that, nothing too flashy but I'm keeping it classy. Also, I added a share button to share my wonderful blog with all of your friends.

ESPNBoston.com Patriots Blog Critique
ESPNBoston is a newer ESPN website that is more localized about Boston Sports. They have 3 other hyper-local sites including ESPNLosAngeles, ESPNChicago, and ESPNDallas. When we are looking at ESPNBoston, we see that they have specific blogs that relate to each team. The one I am going to look at it the New England Patriots Blog.
Patriots Blog on ESPNBoston.com has all the latest news about the Patriots. They have roster updates, transactions, depth charts, injury updates and a lot more. They do a great job of giving an in-depth look at all of the most up to date Patriots news.
Something they don't do very well is explain things sometimes. Even a sports fan such as myself doesn't understand all of the injury information they throw out there. A Sprained MCL or contusion of the leg means nothing to me, so maybe they could simplify it to the body part and how long they are going to be out for.
Another thing that ESPN specifically could do is more some more hyper-local websites. What if I was a Cleveland Browns fan? What if I was a St. Louis Blues fan? I wouldn't be getting the same kind of insight as I am here in New England. ESPN has the resources, and they should think about adding more of these new websites.
That's all folks,

Dog Bite
A Midville Police Officer issued a ticket to two individuals yesterday, one being a dog.
Police say that a dog had bit a 6-year-old child around the ear and neck.
The dog's owner was issued at ticket for a leash law violation, and the dog was quarantined for ten days.
This is the second time the mixed chow has bitten a small child.
Gordy Jameson, the dog's owner, was issued a citation for having a vicious dog.

CBS Atlanta Critique
CBS Atlanta does a great job of laying out their website. It doesn't seem cluttered as they try to mix in story links with videos, photos, advertisements.
Next, their stories are not only relevant to Atlanta, but readers from outside of the area can also read up on news that affects the entire country. They do a good job of separating all of all the different types stories from sports to entertainment where everyone can easily find what they want.
One of the few items I do not think is good about the site is the lack of the use of space that they have on the page. The page is very skinny and makes it very difficult to find some things as you have to scroll up and down the page a lot to get to different sections of the site.
Otherwise, the site is great and useful not only to those in Atlanta, but people across the country.
